This is the first episode in our series on Lu Xun, and, for this episode, we are going to look at some of the earliest aspects of Lu Xun’s career, both his time growing up in Shaoxing, his time in Japan and his attempts to become a translator.

It will be eye-opening to further consider Lu Xun’s works in a world context rather than in merely his time and place. For example his notion that with the right books, folks will make out alright. That’s a more nearly universal proposal than just thinking of Xun addressing Republican Era Chinese in their turbulent context. Thank you both for an inspiring listen. Now, … on to Lu Xun, part 2!
